NetherRealm's Mortal Kombat 1 has finally got a gameplay reveal trailer at this year's Summer Game Fest, as well as a release date of September 19th 2023. The trailer shows off some fights between iconic characters as well as answering fan questions about the game's story.
The hype has been building for the latest instalment in the spine-shredding, bone-crunching beat em up over the last few weeks and this latest gameplay trailer proves why. Showing off multiple fighters facing off against each other including a young Raiden fighting against Kenshi, duking it out in what looks like a Shaolin temple.
Some brand new grizzly fatalities were also showcased including Scorpion using his trade mark Kunai to skewer Sub-Zero, then Divebomb him into a ball of fire and Raiden using Scorpions body as a blood piñata. Honestly, there are too many fatalities in the trailer to list, so check them out in all their blood soaked glory here.
It appears that rather than a hard reboot of the series, Mortal Kombat 1 will serve as a continuation of the events that take place in the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath DLC. At the end of the DLC, the MK timeline is reset, (again), after Liu Kang and Raiden fuse into one being to take down the Titan of time Kroninca.

The gameplay trailer gave us more details on Mortal Kombat 1's story including a look at the designs of classic characters in this brand new timeline and Liu Kang assembling the defenders of Earth Realm to deal with yet another apocalyptic event. This new timeline also has several interesting changes to character origins including making Sub Zero and Scorpion brothers.
Alongside the gameplay trailer, NetherRealm Studios over the last few weeks, has been teasing fans with the inclusion of some new features, that include what they call a "Kameo system". The "Kameo system" allows players to choose an ally to assist them in combat with combos and to help deal extra damage.
Mortal Kombat creator, Ed Boon also announced on stage that Kameo fighters will feature characters in their classic looks, as well as old fan favourites who haven't been seen for a while. More information will be revealed about who will be part of the Kameo roster closer to launch.

One of Mortal Kombat's most iconic aspects in recent years is the roster of celebrity cameo fighters that have become available after release. In the past, we’ve had Robo-cop, the Terminator and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as part of DLC fighters released later on down the line.
The most recent leaks we’ve had about Mortal Kombat 1 are the inclusion of two superpowered fighters in the form of Invincibles’ Big Bad Omni-man and The Boys’ twisted mirror of the Big Blue Boy scout Homelander. From this trailer, we get to see our first bonus fighter in form of a pre-order exclusive Shang Tsung who will be available at launch.
