Square Enix today dropped a brand new trailer for the second entry in its Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Final Fantasy XVI isn't out yet, but Square Enix is already getting the ball rolling for its next mainline entry. Today's Summer Game Fest wrapped with a surprise trailer for the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The trailer features a look at the story, gameplay, and expansive world players will get to explore in Rebirth.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth picks up after the events of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Cloud and company have successfully altered the timeline and escaped Midgar to embark on a quest to defeat Sephiroth. Rebirth will incorporate elements from the original VII, such as the party's journey to Nibelheim, along with new story elements created by the party's interference in the timeline.
"We’re honored to bring Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to players around the world early next year," said producer Yoshinori Kitase. "In the next installment of this thrilling tale, Cloud and his friends—both new and returning—will embark on a new adventure, so all players can enjoy this story, even those without any familiarity with the previous title or the original Final Fantasy VII. The entire team has worked fervently with love and adoration for the world of Final Fantasy VII to deliver an unforgettable experience for new adventurers and longtime fans alike, reaching new heights of cinematic storytelling, immersive and fast-paced combat, and rich exploration across a vast world. We can't wait to share more details later this year."
Based on the trailer, gameplay in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth appears similar to VII Remake. Combat meshes together real-time elements with the classic ATB system, giving players a fast-paced system that's both visually appealing and strategic. The trailer confirms that Red XIII, who was a guest character in Remake, is a full-fledged party member in Rebirth. While Yuffie does appear in the trailer, it remains unknown if she’ll join the party.
Technology-wise, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth looks to be utilizing the power of the PS5 to showcase large, highly-detailed environments. While VII Remake's levels and visuals were limited by last-gen hardware, Rebirth is opening things up for exploration. The trailer showcases several different environments across Gaia for players to explore. It also confirmed the return of ridable Chocobos.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launches early 2024 on PS5. While we don't know the file size quite yet, we expect Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to be a massive game with the game launching with two discs.
