Square Enix debuts new Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 trailer
Following a week of cryptic teases, Square Enix showcased a new Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 trailer during Summer Game Fest 2023 with an updated release date. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2, officially called Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, will launch sometime in early 2024 – and in a throwback to the RPGs of yesteryear, it's a two-disc game.
That makes it the first two-disc game on PS5, though how long FF7R Part 2 will be and what parts of Cloud's story it covers are still up in the air.
In true Final Fantasy 7 Remake fashion, the new trailer is a mix of recognizable story beats and completely new ideas that raise the question of what, exactly, is going on in the story. It opens with Barrett, Aerith, and Tifa being carted away on stretchers after a tornado in Midgar – something that certainly doesn't happen in the original game – before switching to Cloud and co.'s first foray outside the city.
Notably absent after his cameo in FF7 Remake Intergrade was Zack Fair, though it seems Yuffie will play a bigger role than her optional appearance in the original game.
We see Cosmo Canyon and hear Red XIII's grandfather giving his speech about the Lifestream. We also hear Sephiroth saying he actually killed Tifa on the day of the Nibelheim disaster after a brief glimpse of Jenova. Tifa definitely doesn't die in Nibelheim in the original Final Fantasy 7, so whether Sephiroth is simply lying or the timeline is well and truly scattered, we’ll just have to wait and find out.
Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 16 is due out on PS5 on June 22, 2023.
