Tweens and Teens might be asking if they can see this one. A good scary movie is often a pull for kids in this age range. But can they? What is the true age rating of The Boogeyman? Can your kids watch this one? We’re covering the 7 big things parents need to know about the age rating for The Boogeyman in this parents guide.

"The Boogeyman," a horror-thriller from the mind of best-selling author Stephen King, opens June 2, 2023, in theaters nationwide.

High school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister Sawyer are reeling from the recent death of their mother and aren't getting much support from their father, Will, a therapist who is dealing with his own pain.

When a desperate patient unexpectedly shows up at their home seeking help, he leaves behind a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering of its victims.

Can your kids watch this one? What is the age rating of The Boogeyman?

This parent's guide will help you decide if your family can handle the seven big issues with movies and shows: mature topics, gore, violence, language, sex, romance, and nudity. We’ll also give The Boogeyman age rating and age-appropriate recommendations.

Photosensitivity warning: there are scenes with flashing lights that could be triggering for some kids.

There is some language in The Boogeyman that parents need to be aware of.

There are no F-bombs, however, which keeps this movie fairly safe from a language perspective.

Your kids will hear:

Overall, language isn't too pervasive in the movie or a huge issue for most teens in terms of content.

There is no sex, romance, or nudity in The Boogeyman.

There are some solid scares in The Boogeyman that will give your teens and tweens a thrill.

It's a good, mid-level intensity where you’re spending a bit of time bracing for the jump scares and peeping through your fingers. But not so scary or gory you have to look away.

There are some bloody scenes, big jump scares, and gross moments in the movie.

The deaths of children are discussed with the death of an infant kicking the movie off. There is blood shown spraying on a picture frame, but you don't see the child being hurt in the moment.

A pulled tooth makes multiple appearances (don't want to give this away) but one of them is pretty gag-inducing.

An ankle is broken violently on screen so if you’re squeamish about those kinds of things, you’ll winch for sure.

As far as violence goes, there are physical attacks and gunshot blasts, as well as a large fire.

A man dies by suicide and a child discovers the body.

The death of a mother is discussed and is a primary focus of the family plot.

Kids smoke pot and discuss drinking alcohol. It's not over the top, but it has a mean girl's moment attached to it.

The main family is grieving the loss of a parent and another family is grieving the loss of their children. Both topics could be too heavy or triggering for some families.

The Boogeyman is rated PG-13 for Terror, Teen Drug Use, Some Strong Language, and Violent Content.

This is a fairly scary movie, but we feel like it hits the right spot for a PG-13 film.

There's enough to mildly terrify you in the moment, but not too much that you won't be able to sleep at night.

We’d stick with kids 6 grade and up (11-12 age range) who are already interested in scary movies and have seen a few already.

This wouldn't be the "starter" scary movie for young kids, but if they have some experience watching horror, this one will check all the right scary buttons.

We’re adding it to our list of Scary but not Too Scary movies for teens and tweens– but with an asterisk that it shouldn't be a first-time horror movie for the younger kids.
